A 24-year-old man has been charged with a range of offences after allegedly assaulting police at Katherine about 8.30pm.
Police responded to a report of a man stealing alcohol from a Katherine residence.
On the way to the location, police saw a man matching the description of the alleged offender and went to arrest him.
After being handcuffed, and while being searched, the man allegedly assaulted an officer, kicking his legs and hitting him in the head.
The man was taken to Katherine watch house. The police officer suffered minor injuries.
Superintendent Daniel Shean said no one deserved to go to work to be assaulted.
"Assaults on police will not be tolerated. Those that assault police will be held to account for their actions," he said.
The man has been charged with assaulting police, resisting police in execution of their duty, stealing, and trespassing.
Northern Territory Police also expressed disappointed in the behaviour of a large group of people in Alice Springs.

About 12.30am police responded to a report of disturbance at the Hidden Valley Town Camp when a large group of intoxicated people surrounded and threatened police.
Due to the large and aggressive nature of the crowd, more police were called in.
Rocks were thrown at a police vehicle, causing damage.
Commander Bradley Currie said police were trying to identify offenders.
"The whole incident is really disappointing," Commander Currie said.
"Police officers are there to keep people safe, and have been working tirelessly with other agencies to protect vulnerable people in our community as part of the COVID-19 response.
"It is concerning that people are continuing to ignore guidelines, and if this ignorance continues, the risk will continue to rise as we navigate our way through the prevention and response to COVID-19.
"We need leadership within our community so we can work together to stop this behaviour."
