Preliminary designs wanted to keep the trees but Katherine Town Council announced last week the trees had to go as part of the $3.1 million development of the town square (50 cent park).
The clock was first to go as contractors continued work this week to clear the site.
"After further condition assessment of the existing trees, it was determined that removal is required," council said in a statement last week.
"Whilst all existing trees will be removed, council will be significantly increasing the number of trees on site as part of the natural shade canopy and removed trees will be replaced with suitable, established trees."
The upgrade to the popularly known 50 cent park is the council's bid to "revitalise" Katherine's CBD.
The CBD upgrade, financed by the NT Government, was originally granted $5 million but $1.5 million was diverted to finish the long delayed hot springs project.
In relation to the CBD upgrade, council said it was working closely with Katherine Constructions and funding bodies to ensure the project was delivered as envisioned.
"Demolition works are nearing completion with works set to commence on the civil and structural elements in early August."
The entire project is due to be completed by the end of the year.
