To people elsewhere, this may seem particularly trivial. Welcome, but nothing to blink an eye at.
However, unexpected things become ultra important in regional towns, especially those three hours away from the closest city.
The opening of a Kmart, or in our case K Hub, would incite this much excitement in few places.
But ever since the big red letters of Target were torn from the building and replaced with blue, lifting Katherine to the ranks of towns and cities treated with a store, curiosity at what's inside has been bubbling.
K Hubs will become a presence in around 50 regional towns around Australia over the coming year, as they progressively replace around half of the Target Country stores scheduled for closure.
It's a big ticket item that's been long-awaited. But does it live up to the hype?
In a short survey of Katherine residents today, we asked if the new store was living up to the hype. An overwhelming 'yes' was the consensus.
The sheer volume of stuff squeezed inside ticked a lot of boxes, as did the clothes and the homewares.
It has been a hive of activity since the doors flung open yesterday morning, and if busyness is anything to go on, it is clearly getting the nod of approval.
I'd like to see lava lamps or salt lamps, but other than that it's really good.

It is great for Katherine. It is great for school Knick-knacks and the cheaper prices are very, very welcome.
We all do Kmart when we go to Darwin, but now we won't have to. We are pretty impressed with the amount of stock too.
- Jacqui Paull
I don't think it will live up to expectations. People have been talking about this for years, there has been so much hype. I've heard rumours it's basically the same shop, different name.
- Ryder Mountain
I'm really excited. Mostly for the clothes. Kmart has such a good range so it will be a good addition.

Looks good. More stuff in a smaller space. For sure will be busy - it's a new store, what else would you expect.
- John Pracy
We're very excited, mostly for the clothes. Finally some fashion.
- Hayley Roberts
I've already bought a new dress and stuff for the house. Target is usually a bit pricier, so we are definitely happy about all the upcoming sales.
