An NT Health spokesperson did not reveal when the clinic would open but said an announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
"Katherine residents eligible for the vaccine in Phase 1B will have access to a COVID-19 vaccination in the township in the coming weeks," the spokesperson said.
Katherine residents will not be expected to travel to Darwin to receive their vaccine.
"Planning is being undertaken with the Commonwealth Government for how this will be managed, where the clinics will be, and when they will open, to make sure all eligible Territorians have access to the COVID-19 vaccine," the spokesperson said.
Similar clinics will also be set up in Gove and Tennant Creek, after the NT received an initial 1600 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine as part of the first delivery for Phase 1B.
Last week, the Federal Government revealed an online booking system for vaccine appointments, however no local service was offered in Katherine with the closest clinics located in Darwin.
This week, 10 GPs and three respiratory clinics will begin administering Covid vaccines across the NT as part of Phase 1B.
Meanwhile NT Health also outlined how Indigenous communities will be vaccinated as the rollout progresses.
"Thirteen Aboriginal community health organisations will also be providing the vaccine to their clients and communities, including in Katherine," the spokesperson said.
"The roll-out will be staged with some commencing earlier than others."
The spokesperson encouraged people to check the Australian Government's eligibility checker to find out what phase they can get their vaccination.
According to the Department of Health website, people who are eligible under Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout are:
- Elderly adults aged 80 years and over
- Elderly adults aged 70-79 years
- Other health care workers
- Begin vaccinating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults
- Adults with a specified medical condition
- Adults with a disability who have a specified underlying medical condition
- Critical and high risk workers including defence, police, fire, emergency services and meat processing
In a statement, NT Health said it has administered 5083 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine so far.
This includes 467 Territorians who have received their second dose and are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to NT Health.
Katherine front line workers are expected to receive their second dose at the end of next week.
"Katherine residents eligible in a phase 1A have received their first doses of the vaccine in Katherine and our priority is to make sure those most at risk receive their second dose," the NT Health spokesperson said.
Phase 1A of the vaccine rollout has been based in Darwin and Alice Springs, with doses of the jab transported to Katherine for eligible front line workers.
