Members from the Katherine Criminal Investigations Branch allege a 30-year-old man set fire to a vehicle in Katherine South, which then spread to another vehicle parked alongside.
He has been charged with two counts of arson and was remanded to appear in Katherine Local Court on 2 December 2021
Constable Kylie Dutton thanked the public for their assistance in finding the alleged offender.
"Police continue to call for information and would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist the investigation," she said.
Anyone with information, CCTV or mobile footage of any unusual activity in this area between 10.30pm and 11.15pm, is asked call police on 131 444 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000. Please quote reference 9862471.
EARLIER: Katherine police are calling for information after two cars were destroyed by fire overnight.
Just before 11pm on Tuesday, police received reports of a car on Victoria Highway, Katherine South and arrived to find two vehicles engulfed in flames.
Residents in a nearby block of flats were evacuated as a prevaution.
The fire was contained and no other property was damaged.
Anyone with CCTV or mobile footage or who witnessed any unusual activity in the area between 10.30 and 11.15pm is urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference 9862471.
"Police believe this is an isolated incident and there is no reason for public concern, however we are calling for witnesses to come forward," Constable Kylie Dutton said.
