He said the organisation was currently working to get the community prepared for any potential cyclone damage.
"We're currently working with local council, Police and CDP partners to assist community messaging and yard cleanups," Mr Schaefer-Walker said.
OTHER CYCLONE NEWS:
"We're also assisting with getting the message out to locals to prepare their cyclone kits (tinned foods, torches, first aid etc) as well as letting people know where the rated shelters are.
"We're just working our way through the preparedness side of our local disaster plan."
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jude Scott said the system was moving "quite quickly" west from the Gulf of Carpentaria, meaning the Bureau has "high confidence of its track in that westerly direction."
She said it is not predicted to reach category three strength before reaching the Northern Territory.
"It's not spending enough time over water to intensify into category 3 strength," Ms Scott said.
OTHER NEWS:
She said the entire Top End is set to receive some significant rain over the next few days as it makes its way through.
"Daily rainfall totals of 100 to 150 millimetres of rain are expected around the center of the system, up to 200 millimeters in some locations or perhaps more," she said.
"A flood watch is current for the Carpentaria coastal rivers, and flood watches and warnings may continue to be issued in the coming days for other river catchments across the Top End."
