The 500 or so attendees who turned up to pay their respects spilled out of the Showground Pavilion.
Mr Berto, aged 35, a champion Northern Territory footballer, died in a car crash near Pine Creek late last month.
Along with friends and family, former club mates from the Palmerston Magpies attended the funeral.
In addition to readings read by Leah Flanagan and Kara Huddleston, many spoke at the sombre event telling past stories and describing Mr Berto as a loving father and husband and a beloved friend.
Mr Berto also played for the South Adelaide football club making his league debut in 2004 and winning the reserves best and fairest the same year.
The two and a half hour service was followed by a burial at the Katherine Cemetery.
