Contesting his 12th election, Mr Snowdon withstood a strong challenge from the CLP's Jacinta Price to claim another win to continue his remarkable career in politics.
He scored the win without the same level of support from Katherine that he won at the 2016 poll.
While he never looked in much trouble during the count, there has been a delay while ballot boxes in remote areas were counted.
Scrutiny of Katherine's polling booth results today showed the town has swung a lot of support back to the CLP.
There has been media speculation over the weekend this may translate into a return to the CLP stronghold of old when the Territory elections are held next year.
Sitting MP Sandra Nelson scored an historic win for the ALP in Katherine in 2016 but has since announced she would not be contesting a second poll.
Totals of primary votes cast in Katherine - the CLP's Ms Price scored 1723 votes against Mr Snowdon's 1285.
Clyde Fenton booth - Snowdon 178, Price 264.
MacFarlane Pre-school - Snowdon 209, Price 185.
Tindal - Snowdon 65, Price - 115.
Pre-poll - Snowdon 833, Price 1159.
Mr Snowdon has had two stints as Member for the Northern Territory, from 1998-2001 and from 1986-1996, and has represented Lingiari since it was created in 2001.
Katherine's own vet Dr Sam McMahon is also heading to Canberra in the Senate as the Territory's only member of the returned Morrison Government.
The ALP's Malarndirri McCarthy won the second Senate vacancy.
In Solomon, Labor's Luke Gosling was also returned.
On the national stage, the Morrison Government is now expected to have a clear majority of seats in the Lower House.
