Regional Destination Management Plans have been written for the popular tourism areas Big Rivers, Barkly, Alice Springs, MacDonnell Ranges and Lasseters.
Tourism and Hospitality minister Natasha Fyles said the plans have a ten year time frame and are part of the governments efforts to help the industry recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
"As the tourism industry continues to navigate its way through the impacts of COVID-19, the Destination Management Plans underpin a holistic approach to tourism in the NT over the next decade," she said.
Ms Fyles said the Plans are a part of the Northern Territory's Tourism Industry Strategy 2030 and include the tourism advantages for each region.
The plans aim to provide a roadmap on how to maximise the tourism attractions in each region.
The NT Tourism website lists the advantages for the Big Rivers region, they include:
- Drive tourism and the region's central location it is connected by road to Queensland, Western Australia and the North and South of the Territory.
- The natural attractions in the region, including eight national parks or reserves and five main river systems.
- Authentic Aboriginal cultural experiences.
- Historical and heritage experiences.
A further two Destination Management Plans for East Arnhem Land and Greater Darwin will be developed and released in 2021, according to the NT government.
This comes after the government released tourism vouchers to be spent by the end of January.
The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously damaged the tourism industry around the world.
Katherine experienced this, with the usual streams of grey nomads not visiting the town due to state and international border closures.
