Fuel growth, root moisture and grass curing in the local area is currently being addressed as part of the Katherine Fire Brigade's mitigation plan.
Katherine Fire Brigade station officer, Bernie Welsford, said an average fire season is expected this year but added his brigade is prepared should any extraordinary developments arise.
"We're expecting a reasonable fire season this year because we've had a fair bit of regrowth," he said.
"Our fire mitigation plans are in place at the moment including our prescribed burning by private contractors that is taking place now, they're on target for Katherine and the regional areas like Timber Creek and Borroloola.
"We may get some extraordinary or additional fire behaviour development at some point throughout the fire season but we're not expecting a large one."
The Katherine community are encouraged to enact their regular fire preventive measures ahead of the season.
"People need to take whatever preparations they have taking in the prior fire seasons which includes making sure fire breaks are in place, they have adequate access to water in the event there is a fire, and monitoring the NT Government fire indicator applications and media for any fire warnings that come out over the period," Welsford said.
