In addition to postponing of the NAIDOC Week Festival and the cancellation of school holiday activities, a decision on the Katherine Show and Rodeo is expected to be made next week, while sport has also been affected as AFL Northern Territory announced on Tuesday that training and matches in the Big Rivers Football League would not take place in the Katherine region until further notice.
Family Fun Day at Katherine Museum was due to run on Wednesday, but was also postponed.
"Please note this event has been postponed until further notice, we apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused however our priority is ensuring that our Community remains safe during the current outbreak," a statement on the event's Facebook page said.
Territory Day celebrations on Thursday have also been postponed.
Northern Territory Police are reminding residents that anybody found igniting, discharging or in possession of fireworks could face a hefty fine.
All Territory Day events, including public and private fireworks, have been delayed across the Territory.
Acting assistant commissioner Travis Wurst said under the Dangerous Goods Act 1998, it was an offence to ignite, discharge or possess fireworks.
"This specifically includes people who may be storing fireworks purchased in previous years," he said.
"Old fireworks can be potentially faulty and extremely dangerous to ignite.
"Territorians should take comfort in that they will be able to celebrate Territory Day at a later date, and we ask that when that day arrives, you celebrate safely."
Also cancelled are a range of School Holiday Program activities, including:
- Somerville Movies - July 1
- Wildtime with Ranger Stacey - July 2
- Aly de Groot Collecting and Connecting with Cyanotype - July 2
- Kentish Lego - July 5
- Kentish Baykali Hip Jop Dance July 6-7
- Air Force Paper Pilots - July 19
Call ahead to make sure other activities are still running.
Member for Katherine Jo Hersey said she hoped the Katherine Show would be able to go ahead as a lot of planning had gone into it, and other events.
"It is disappointing [to cancel] as a lot of organisation goes into these events," she said.
