Charles Darwin University is aiming to address worker shortages in Katherine's hospitality sector by offering a range of new cooking and hospitality courses at its local campus.

Courses on Cake Decorating and Asian Cookery will be among those on offer for aspiring chefs, bakers and caterers over select weeks at the Katherine campus's new industrial kitchen facilities.
The $200,000 project included upgrades to existing electrical infrastructure and upgrade of the gas systems to cater for a new stove as well as ancillary works to freshen the kitchen area up and meet the spatial needs of students and the teaching environment.
CDU Associate Vice-Chancellor for Katherine and Big Rivers Alison Haines said the project aimed to get encourage locals to take up a new skill and help with worker shortages in town.

"If you've ever wanted to try your hand at cooking, baking or cake decorating locally in Katherine now is your opportunity," Ms Haines said.
"We know that local restaurants and hospitality businesses in the region have struggled to find workers, so expanding into hospitality further supports worker shortages and provides new opportunities for people."
VET Team Leader Culinary Arts and Hospitality Robert Schwerdt said this was the first time courses like this would be offered in Katherine.
"Our team of chefs, bakers and butchers are very excited to bring our broad range of culinary skills to the Big Rivers Region," he said.
