There are many people in the Katherine region who do not hesitate to go the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of their friends, families and the community they live in. Those people are often quiet achievers who do not get the recognition they deserve. To celebrate quiet achievers in the region the Katherine Times - with the support of Nitmiluk Tours - proudly presents this week’s Community Hero.

WITH AN enthusiasm to help children and families prosper, Kate Bishop laid the foundations, and has developed the 'Good Beginnings’ programs and activities in Katherine for 16 years in August.
Her colleagues say Ms Bishop has worked tirelessly, armed with undying positivity and passion for her work.
The former nurse is responsible for 15 staff, and is the state manager for Good Beginnings child care centres in Palmerston and Katherine, and runs programs in many indigenous communities throughout the NT.
Ms Bishop and her staff work with the parents and their child together, to extend their knowledge and parenting skills, and feel supported.
Team leader for Intensive Family Support Services Sarah Dannatt said Ms Bishop was “inspiring”.
“She is dedicated to children, Good Beginnings is here because of Kate,” Ms Danatt said.
“She sees people’s strengths and tries to work with them, (and) she encourages us to do that with the families (that we work with).”
Her staff at Good Beginnings say Ms Bishop “is good at identifying where help is needed in the community”, and is pro-active in collaborating with a wide range of organisations and individuals within Katherine.
Family program support officer Christine Knezevic said Ms Bishop is very inclusive of the broader community.
“She has an awareness that makes people feel involved and connected,” she said.
As a resident of Katherine for more than 30 years, Ms Bishop has contributed to many community committees, including Women’s Crisis and Katherine East Child Care, and is on the board for the Country Woman’s Association.
She is also an active member of the RSPCA.
